II CINEMA RITROVATO FESTIVAL - BOLOGNA, ITALY 2022

The 36th edition of the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival, was promoted by the Cineteca di Bologna, and took place in Bologna, Italy from June 25th to July 3rd 2022. 397 films in 9 days. Nine days of screenings from morning to night, in 7 theaters involved in the city (Sala Scorsese and Sala Mastroianni at Cinema Lumière, Auditorium - DAMSLAB, Cinema Jolly, Cinema Arlecchino, Cinema Europa, Sala Cervi), and the grand finale, every evening, in Piazza Maggiore and two special evenings, also outdoors, in Piazzetta Pasolini. And at the Renzo Renzi Library the appointment renewed with the Book Fair, the publishing fair dedicated to film publications, which this year brings together 70 publishers. And then the meetings at the Arena del Sole Theatre and at the MAST.

Roundabout’s own Vincent Pirozzi, Vice President of Mastering, traveled to Bologna, Italy to represent our restoration team with his expertise participating in roundtable panel discussions on restoration work for highlighted feature films All That Money Can Buy (1941), Invaders From Mars (1953), and represented our work on the restoration, and mastering The Godfather: Part III (1990) director’s recut titled The Godfather Coda The Death of Michael Corleone in 2020, as part of the highlighted restoration discussion for The 50 Year Journey of The Godfather Films. Roundabout Entertainment accomplished the HDR and SDR Home Theater, as well as Digital Cinema Color Correction, and some of the 4K scanning on these highlighted films.

Roundabout Entertainment is very proud Vincent Pirozzi was a featured guest participating in a roundtable panel discussion titled  “HDR and Classic Films” along with highly respected featured guests Stephen Bearman (Silver Salt), Lee Kline (The Criterion Collection), James Mockoski (American Zoetrope), James White (Arrow Films), and Davide Pozzi (L’Immagine Ritrovata); focusing on HDR and the restoration of classic films at the Auditorium - DAMSLAB.

PRATELLO POP - RECOVERED AND RESTORED

ALL THAT MONEY CAN BUY (1941)

Karen Stetler (The Criterion Collection), Scott MacQueen (Supervisor Restoration), and our own Vincent Pirozzi (Roundabout) discussed the featured restoration process for William Dieterle’s All That Money Can Buy aka The Devil and Daniel Webster.

Director William Dieterle’s All That Money Can Buy (1941), is a rural American Faustian tale featuring an Oscar-nominated Walter Huston as the earthly embodiment of the devil. Digital restoration work was completed at Roundabout Entertainment. All That Money Can Buy was restored by the Archive and The Film Foundation in collaboration with Janus Films, MoMA The Museum of Modern Art and The Library of Congress. Funding provided by The Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation.

INVADERS FROM MARS (1953)

To show the full beauty of this edition’s restorations, II Cinema Ritrovato added one new screen to the usual venues: Cinema Europa, where Il Cinema Ritrovato was born 36 years ago and where, in the evenings, they hosted the programme of Pratello Pop, a sub-section of Recovered and Restored focusing on the new pleasures of cinephila through seven eccentric, passionate and visionary films. Director William Cameron Menzies Invaders from Mars restoration work featured, was completed by our expert team at Roundabout Entertainment, with color by Roundabout colorist Gregg Garvin.

II Cinema Ritrovato lectures included include in-depth analyses of individual restorations as well as a look at some wider issues, such as a reflection on the comparison between newly restored digital prints and original 35mm prints and the debate around the continued restoration of previously restored films due to technological advancements or the discovery of new material. A Case Study featuring Invaders from Mars took place at the Auditorium- DAMSlab.

RESTORATION WORK IS NEVER DONE: THE 50 YEAR JOURNEY OF “THE GODFATHER" FILMS

Director Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is now canonized as one of the most commercially and most critically successful of all modern Hollywood productions.

Director of photography Gordon Willis perfected his low-key lighting register and extensive use of shadows, subtly injecting sepia into the colour balance, and helping establish a new era in cinematography. A Case Study featuring The Godfather films took place at the Auditorium- DAMSlab.

This year, II Cinema Ritrovato highlighted restoration work is never done: The 50 Year Journey of The Godfather films. Roundabout Entertainment accomplished the stunning restoration and mastering for the The Godfather: Part III (1990) director’s recut titled The Godfather Coda The Death of Michael Corleone in 2020. Roundabout did the HDR and SDR Home Theater, as well as Digital Cinema Color Correction, and some of the 4K scanning as well, and Roundabout's celebrated Gregg Garvin as colorist.
